Although Lycos does not clearly state their submission policies, they do say:
- You may submit more than one URL from your site as long the URLs represent distinct Web pages.
Multiple pages that contain the same content are considered "spam" and will be excluded.
- The Lycos spider will try to travel through the links contained in your Web page. You can expect the spider to travel down
one level from the page you submit.
- URLs with special characters such as the ampersand (&) and percent sign (%) cannot be added.
Lycos indexes visible text and image alt text and has no support for frames, image maps or meta tags
In order to rank high, you will want to decide two or three phrases on which to focus. Push those words in the body of your page. The important words should appear more frequently, and
the closer to the top of the screen, the better. Larger headings will also add "weight." An introductory paragraph which has a lot of your keywords will be optimal.
It is important to remember that Lycos will use the first 200 or so characters which appear on your page as a summary. That being the case, you will want to be sure that the
introductory paragraph I mentioned before is above the navigation system in your code.
If your site contains frames, be sure you make use of the <NOFRAMES> section. Lycos cannot analyze the content within the frames, but any text in the <NOFRAMES> section will
be indexed.
The ALT attribute of an IMG tag will be analyzed and included in your listing, but they naturally cannot analyze the content of images.
Pages that include irrelevant or repetitive text are considered by Lycos to be spam. They consider this practice to be unacceptable. They say that their software can identify Web pages
which contain spam or "invisible" text and will exclude them from the Lycos catalog.
To get a general idea of how the Lycos spider views your page, look at your Web page through a text-only browser such as Lynx.
